Allen Robinson has never been shy about voicing his opinion on certain players the Chicago Bears should consider bringing in. Already this offseason he speculated how interesting it would be to have Eric Berry next to Eddie Jackson in the secondary on defense. Now it seems he has a new target in mind. This one he happens to be significantly more familiar with.
Word came out via Ian Rapoport of NFL Network and the Jacksonville Jaguars had decided to cut wide receiver Marqise Lee. This comes after the 28-year old suffered an unfortunate knee injury that ended his 2019 season after just three catches. However, in the previous two years he’d become a quality possession target who delivered over 1,500 yards with six touchdowns despite Blake Bortles being the quarterback.
Robinson was teammates with him for four seasons. So there’s an obvious familiarity there. It would appear the idea of reconnecting in Chicago appeals to him quite a bit.
Allen Robinson feels Lee can help but is he what they need?
Lee is a decent player. His numbers show that much. A dependable pass catcher who can have a handful of strong games each season. That said, is he what the Bears need? He’s 6’0 and isn’t known for blazing speed. Nothing about him stands out as explosive. He can be good after the catch which is something they do need. However, just how much of that same ability does he have after the knee injury. Health issues have plagued him ever since college after all.

That being said, it wouldn’t be a shock if the Bears made this move. It’s likely Lee will be relatively cheap to sign. He has connections to Chicago in Robinson, John DeFilippo and Nick Foles. Also being a cut player he won’t count against the compensatory pick formula. So while he might not be exactly what the Bears are looking for, adding him won’t make their passing game worse. If they can get the player he was two years ago, that’s a good thing.
