A Controversial Topic Helped Bears Become Sold On Caleb Williams

-

The Chicago Bears won’t come right out and say, but everybody sees the writing on the wall. Caleb Williams will become their next quarterback. All signs point to it. GM Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus have only made half-hearted efforts to conceal it. There isn’t any reason at this point. They hold the #1 pick. Nobody can jump in front of them. It is smooth sailing to their guy next month. What is more interesting is how they arrived at this decision in the first place, especially since it appears to be such a strong class at quarterback.

There were several valid answers to this question. It starts with his arm talent. Williams possesses plenty of strength in that right arm to make any throw in the playbook. He also has the elasticity to throw from almost any angle. He’s accurate and gifted at improvisation, often able to make something out of nothing. Next comes the interaction with his teammates. All signs point to a young man who has the love and respect of those he plays with. However, Poles added one fascinating detail that helped clarify how mature and ready Williams actually is for the NFL.

With the NIL deal, there’s pros and cons,” Poles said. “I’m starting to learn that … when we gather information, it’s actually pretty helpful. It puts these guys in a spotlight. It gives them more responsibility. It forces them to prioritize — money, business, football, school. How do they handle that? What kind of structure do they put around them to make sure they’re making good decisions? Do they have people that can say, ‘No, that’s not going to fit with my timeline’? So I think there’s some positives there, and I’m picking that up.”

Caleb Williams already has a taste of NFL life because of the NIL.

Many people feel the Name-Image-Likeness deals in college have led players to become less hungry once they get to the pros. They already have their money. Nothing else to play for, right? Poles doesn’t see it that way. If anything, the NIL is proving to be an excellent tool for determining which players aren’t primarily driven by financial gain. They’re about loving football and the desire to be great. Williams has made more money through NILs than most going into this draft. Yet that hasn’t stopped him from working hard to become the best quarterback he can be.

It is similar to when NFL players got their second contract in the league after four years on a rookie deal. Great players got their money and kept producing at a high level. Others got their money and seemed to taper off after that. NIL served a similar purpose for Caleb Williams. He doesn’t seem to have lost any of his motivation despite already being a millionaire. That helped convince the Bears that he had the necessary mental maturity to handle the further spotlight coming his way.

I just hope whoever Poles drafts this year is 110% ready to work hard. That’s 90% of a successful draft because at this point, most of these guys are talented.

I think the money might have a little to do with it. Ask Oklahoma and his former teammates if it’s all for the love of the game and supporting your teammates. I’m not saying anything is wrong with what Williams has done. This is just a garbage opinion article. Can’t wait until there’s interesting things to talk about.

@Scooby I often wonder who all are alter egos around here. Some people have very similar writing styles that tend to agree with each other. I am sure the writers or owners see the IPs on some people and probably laugh at some very similar IPs if we are being real.
