The Chicago Bears defense played extremely well on Sunday against the Tennessee. They stiffled the Titans normally effective ground attack. DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry each averaged just 2.7 yards per carry. Marcus Mariota completed just 12 of his 21 passes and their offense failed to score any points until the fourth quarter. Needless to say this caused from frustration on their sideline. That and it apparently drove Taylor Lewan insane.
The big offensive tackle was an absolute frothy mess after the Titans finally scored their only touchdown. It was a three-yard shovel pass to Henry against the Bears third-string defense. Talk about humiliating, and Lewan knew. As he was walking off the field cameras caught him ripping his helmet off, yelling at teammates and then going full psycho by headbutting the helmet repeatedly.
Driving Taylor Lewan insane is fun but the bigger picture matters
That’s a scary man even from the safety of a TV screen. It’s impossible to imagine being up close. Well it seems the Bears defense wasn’t intimidated all that much. They had three sacks on the afternoon and were the aggressors from start to finish. That sequence by Lewan was simply his inner competitor coming to the realization that they’d just gotten their “glutes” kicked.
Odds are they’ll have better days but the big story is the Bears D itself. Despite still not quite being at full strength, it was able to put together a great performance against one of the better offenses in the NFL. So try to imagine what will happen if and when they finally get all the pieces in place. No doubt the coaches are salivating at the prospect. Until then though, they can feel content this unit is much deeper and better than a year ago.
