Since taking over as manager of the Chicago Cubs in 2015, Cubs skipper Joe Maddon has turned into quite the pop culture icon in the city of Chicago. His laid-back style of managing and “hippie-esque” vibe is everything the young Chicago Cubs need. His outside the box style of thinking was undoubtedly one of the biggest factors in the Cubs winning their first World Series championship since 1908.
One of the things that stands out most about Maddon are his famous “Maddonisms.” These “Maddonisms” are short phrases that he shares with his team throughout the course of the season that sets the tone for the clubhouse. We’ve heard “try not to suck” and “embrace the target” as being two of the most famous “Maddonisms” thus far but now Maddon is in the process of creating a new slogan for the 2017 team. This year’s slogan will be a bit trickier because it’ll have to fit a team that finds themselves in a position that few Cubs teams have been in — defending World Series champions.
Recently, Maddon has hinted at what his message will be to his 2017 Cubs as they attempt to repeat as champions of baseball and the message revolves around one simple word.
