One Free-Agent Decision Could Reshape the Bears Defense

-

The Chicago Bears are being linked to one of the biggest defensive names on the free-agent market, and it’s easy to see why. According to Pro Football Focus, the Bears are the best fit and landing spot for veteran edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, who they ranked as the No. 1 free agent at his position.

While the offense took a noticeable step forward under Ben Johnson, the defense lagged behind in spots. Chicago finished 21st in EPA per play, and the pass rush was a consistent issue throughout the season. Outside of Montez Sweat, no Bears edge defender posted a pass-rush win rate higher than 10.5%. That lack of pressure made life difficult on the back end and limited the defense’s ceiling.

Even in an injury-shortened season, Hendrickson flashed elite efficiency. He logged just 285 snaps due to a hip injury, yet still produced 23 pressures and earned a 90.0 PFF pass-rushing grade. A reunion with defensive coordinator Dennis Allen only adds to the logic behind the fit.

I also view this as a strong potential move and have heard the Bears could pursue this route while also drafting a young edge rusher. Double-dipping with a proven veteran and premium draft capital, whether in the first or second round, could instantly transform the room. A rotation featuring Hendrickson, Sweat, Austin Booker, and a high-upside rookie would give Chicago one of the more dominant edge groups in the NFC.
