The Chicago Bulls Should Pursuit Anthony Davis Under This Condition

-

The running debate over the last three weeks has been whether the Chicago Bulls should consider a mega-trade for any of the floating All-Stars looking for new homes. Whether it’s Anthony Davis, LaMelo Ball, or now Giannis Antetokounmpo, several top-tier players have seen the writing on the wall in their current situations and decided they want to explore other options. Can Chicago jump on one of these opportunities, and should they? The last time they executed a sizable deal for an All-Star talent, it set back the franchise for five years. Bringing in Nikola Vucevic not only failed to improve the team but also stripped the organization of several youthful assets and future draft picks, catapulting the Orlando Magic to relevance. Here’s the only way they should pull the trigger on a deal for Anthony Davis.

Low Risk, High Reward Trade

Anthony Davis comes with plenty of baggage. Not only does he have several horror stories surrounding his behavior, including forcing his way out of teams and becoming disgruntled quickly if things don’t work out, but he’s also one of the most consistently injured players in the league. Davis has missed 25.7% of his possible career games and is 32 years old. However, over his last 160 games, he’s played in 93% of them, so the injury stamp has been lifted recently. Does Chicago roll the dice in altering their franchise and filling a much-needed rim-protection role?

Over the last dozen games for the Bulls, it’s painfully clear that protecting the rim is the biggest issue. Davis would provide instant relief in that area. If they can offer up the struggling Vucevic, Coby White, and only one first-round pick in the immediate future, the other being five years down the line, they should consider taking the gamble. While Antetokounmpo remains the top priority, the likelihood of that trade is slim. Davis would provide many of the same traits at half the cost.

Moving On From Coby White

No one is surprised to see the aging Vucevic involved in any trade that Chicago would execute this season. At 35 years old, with an expiring contract, he’s the most likely player to be dealt before February’s deadline. The next top candidate, to the surprise of most, has to be Coby White. His contract expires this summer, and any extension would surely increase his annual earnings. Since his addition this year, the Bulls are 2-3, have taken a slide in every statistical category, and are two game-winning shots away from being 0-5 against five teams with six wins or fewer.

His individual offensive production is undeniably great, but the defensive weaknesses, the lack of ball-movement, and the inconsistent outside shooting have made White a liability this year. As difficult as it will be to part ways with the heart and soul of the Bulls over the last few seasons, it’s time to send him elsewhere.
