3 Big Takeaways from Caleb Williams Preseason Debut

-

Caleb Williams made an impressive preseason debut against the Buffalo Bills. Here are my three big takeaways from his nearly flawless performance.

Accuracy on the run

Shane Waldron and the Bears effectively used Caleb Williams by getting him on the move to the edges on several bootlegs, which should become a staple of Chicago’s offense in 2024. Williams looked sharp, and his arm strength was evident. His accuracy stood out, especially on a 26-yard completion to tight end Cole Kmet.

The Bears have a true improviser at quarterback

On the very first drive, Caleb Williams gave us a glimpse of Patrick Mahomes-like magic. Despite being under heavy pressure with a defender in his face, Williams didn’t panic or take a sack. Instead, he showcased one of his best qualities: the ability to improvise. He tossed the ball to D’Andre Swift with an awkward arm angle, and Swift reminded us why the Bears were eager to sign him early in free agency.

Plays like this are what frustrate defenses, energize offenses, and excite fans. While Williams still has a long way to go to reach Mahomes’ level, it’s encouraging to see this kind of playmaking so early in his NFL career.

Caleb Williams wasn’t affected by the moment.

Caleb Williams had an impressive day, giving Bears fans plenty to be excited about. What stood out most wasn’t just his plays or highlights, but how focused and locked in he was from the very start. He arrived at the stadium about four hours early, already showing his seriousness and professionalism. Despite the magnitude of the day for Chicago, the NFL, and himself, Williams stayed calm and composed throughout.

One moment that really captured his poise was a 3rd-and-12 situation on the first drive, following an offensive hold. Williams dropped back and delivered a perfect pass to DJ Moore for a first down.

From that point on, he remained in full control. It’s clear that Williams is ready for the big stage in Chicago, where other quarterbacks have struggled under pressure.
