Insider Hears Matt Eberflus Is Likely Gone When Season Ends

-

The Chicago Bears are 6-22 since the start of 2022. It is by far the worst stretch of football the organization has played in modern history. That isn’t something Matt Eberflus ever expected to have his name attached to. He came in convinced he had the right formula to make the team competitive. If players worked hard, played hard, and followed his H.I.T.S principles, they would win games. It hasn’t happened. Chicago hasn’t had a winning streak in three years, is winless against the division under Eberflus’ watch, and just had their second historic 4th quarter meltdown in less than two months.

If that wasn’t bad enough, Eberflus has seen the defense, his specialty, allow 30 or more points five times this season. Nothing is working. There is no way the franchise brass can justify giving this man a third season. Yet nobody can say what will happen. The McCaskey family has only fired a head coach after two seasons once. That was Marc Trestman. Eberflus’ tenure has been bad, but is it as bad as that was? Albert Breer of The MMQB spoke on the subject. Based on what he’s hearing, the likelihood is the Bears will make a change after the season.

The decision goes higher up the chain than GM Ryan Poles, though.

Matt Eberflus has failed his audition.

There was always an undercurrent of curiosity about whether Kevin Warren might seek changes after taking over as team president. Remember, Poles and Eberflus were hired by George McCaskey and Ted Phillips a year before his arrival. Phillips is gone. Warren runs the show now. He obviously didn’t want to rock the boat right away. That would’ve been unprofessional. He wanted to get a feel for the organization and see how 2023 unfolded. Based on what has happened over the past three months, he has the answers he needs.

Poles is capable at his job. Matt Eberflus is not.

The Bears have a young, talented roster coming together. Their performance through the first 56 minutes of the Detroit game proved that. They need a coach to teach them how to finish in tight games. Eberflus is 2-11 in one-score games as a head coach. His conservative nature plays a big part in those failures. Nobody can say who Warren may have in mind as a replacement. He’s got lots of connections in both the NFL and college football. One can imagine there is a list somewhere. We may find out in just over a month.
