Colts Insider Says Bears Are Exploring Jonathan Taylor Trade

-

The NFL never lacks drama. That is obvious every year. It seems like one or two prominent players always want out of their current circumstances. This year, it’s Jonathan Taylor. It seems absurd to think the former All-Pro running back wants out. He’s been the focal point of the Indianapolis Colts offense since he arrived three years ago. He’s still 24 years old. One would think the Colts would work to keep him happy, especially as they try to develop a young rookie quarterback in Anthony Richardson.

Nope. Team owner Jim Irsay decided to scorch all that by proclaiming there is no way the Colts will pay Taylor a new contract, even saying the team wouldn’t miss him when he’s gone. Unsurprisingly, the running back has refused to practice since those comments were made. Now, he’s requested and been granted permission to seek a trade. It sounds like several teams are interested. According to Colts beat writer Destin Adams of A-to-Z Sports, one of those teams is the Chicago Bears.

After speaking with multiple league sources, I was able to verify that the following teams have expressed interest:

Chicago Bears

Los Angeles Rams

Miami Dolphins

A league source shared with me that the Chicago Bears reached out to gauge what it would take to acquire Jonathan Taylor. However, no offer came from these introductory conversations, and I was told an offer “Isn’t imminent at this time.”

The Bears are likely gathering information on Jonathan Taylor.

That is what responsible teams do. There is no harm in asking what the price tag would be. Initial reports have said the Colts want a 1st round pick. That is going to happen. Taylor is coming off a slightly down season due to injuries and also needs a new contract. It’s no secret he wants to get paid. That means the acquiring team would have to give up a high draft choice and at least $12 million per year. Chicago has the resources to meet both demands. Whether they’re willing to is another story.

If the sources are correct, this would suggest GM Ryan Poles doesn’t mind the money. The Bears have plenty of cap space to throw around next year. Jonathan Taylor is a star and in his prime. He and Justin Fields could make for a lethal combination. The problem is the draft compensation. If the Colts expect multiple Day 2 picks, that isn’t going to happen. Poles is a careful spender. He will only do so if he thinks the Bears are getting a fair deal. He knows they have a strong trio of options in Khalil Herbert, D’Onta Foreman, and Roschon Johnson.

If Taylor can be had for a 2nd or 3rd round pick, that is worth considering. Otherwise, it’s purely information gathering.
