It’s almost unbelievable that we’re down to just one more day of the Bears training camp that is open to the public. Among the many insights gained from these practice sessions, one standout is Justin Fields’ notable progress in the short passing game. Back in 2022, Justin struggled as a quarterback on throws spanning five yards or fewer. To be fair, much of this struggle can be attributed to the limited talent of his receiving corps. However, the truly encouraging aspect is his rapid improvement in taking the check-downs and executing the easy plays. This mindset will help reduce hits on him and minimize the unnecessary sacks. The team stands to benefit by being better positioned throughout drives as well, especially during crucial third-downs. Simple check-offs to the running back or quick slants to DJ Moore could effortlessly gain additional yards. The growth is evident in Justin Fields’ passing efficiency and will play a pivotal role, particularly if the Bears want to contend for the division title this upcoming season.
Additional Observations From Bears Training Camp
Training camp has seen a constant exchange of momentum from both offensive and defensive sides of the ball. As I discussed in the latest episode of the BFR Podcast, that is now partnered with Sports Mockery, this dynamic is exactly what’s needed during camp. It’s common to frequently hear about Bears defenses dominating practices or the offense’s struggles. However, the reality is that the roster is now filled with talent in a lot of positions. Tyler Scott, the rookie wide receiver for the Bears, continues to impress, as does Velus Jones Jr., who’s in his second year. As the Bears gear up for their first preseason game against Tennessee, position battles are emerging. This year feels different and I am actually excited to watch all of the Bears young talent fight for spots on the roster during the preseason.
For a more in-depth analysis of Justin Fields’ performance, a deep dive into the 2023 Bears depth chart, and a preview of the upcoming game Bears vs. Titans preseason, I highly recommend tuning into the most recent episode of the BFR Podcast.
