Aaron Rodgers is gone. The Green Bay Packers missed the playoffs last year after wetting the bed at home against the Detroit Lions. Yet that hasn’t stopped fans from continuing to presume nothing will change. They still expect this team to resume control of the NFC North and to be a consistent contender for the Super Bowl. Nobody seems to appreciate how clearly they’ve been declining since their peak in 2020. Their offense isn’t as explosive anymore, and their defense underachieved last year despite several 1st round picks on the roster.
Good luck has followed this organization for 30 years, but nothing lasts forever. Yet the delusion persists. Chicago Bears fans got another hint of this when a Packers writer for A to Z Sports stated in a recent article that the team needs a veteran presence at wide receiver. That isn’t anything out of the ordinary. Green Bay has an exceedingly young corps led by Christian Watson. A little veteran leadership makes sense. Where it gets wild is the guy the writer pinpointed as a good option.
“Adding a veteran option before training camp wouldn’t be a bad idea. The problem is there aren’t many options out there. Plus, unless the player has had experience in a LaFleur-like offense, there will be a steep learning curve since said player missed all of the Packers’ offseason program.
“That’s why a guy like Chicago Bears wideout Dante Pettis makes a lot of sense to keep an eye on. Yes, he’s currently on the Bears, but early impressions are he won’t make the 53-man roster after having his best year since 2018 – his rookie year.”
The Green Bay Packers wanting Dante Pettis would be laughable.
With all due respect, the former 2nd round pick proved last year that he is nothing more than a serviceable fourth or fifth receiver on a depth chart. It’s argued that nobody on Green Bay’s roster has started a full season. I hate to break it to you, but neither has Pettis. While he suited up for all 17 games last year, he only started seven. He’s a career journeyman that has never played at a high level in this league. If the Packers were looking for some veteran leadership, sign Jarvis Landry or T.Y. Hilton. They can provide that while also being reasonably productive.
Then again, it’s better for everybody else if they acquire Pettis. Maybe then the Green Bay Packers can experience him having some brutal drops in key situations. This feels like another sign that Packers fans remain steadfast in believing that anything their team touches will turn to gold. This comes despite considerable evidence in recent years that this is not the case. Rodgers covered up a lot of their flaws for a long time. Now we’ll get to see how good (or bad) they really are.
