When OTAs began last month, Justin Fields didn’t waste time getting straight to work. His commitment to improving on his 2022 season has been evident with every update. The young quarterback won’t be denied his goal of becoming great in this league. He already crossed the first barrier, emerging as one of the most dangerous rushing threats his position had ever seen. When you’re breaking records set by Michael Vick, you know you’re pretty good with your legs. That isn’t enough for many, though.
As great as Vick was, most don’t consider him among the NFL’s best because he never truly matured as a passer. He had great moments but never sustained a great season. Many feel that is what held him back from achieving greater team success. Fields has no intention of falling into that same trap. It’s why he has dedicated so much of his time to improving his footwork and film study. Nicholas Moreano of CHGO has seen glimpses of legitimate progress during spring practices.
He had one story he shared on the Bears Banter podcast with Bill Zimmerman.
Justin Fields is making throws he couldn’t last year.
One of the persistent criticisms of him was his unwillingness to trust his arm in tight window throws, particularly over the middle. Going through progressions was also a problem. He’d often be a tick late coming off his first read, which allowed pass rushers to get home. This story by Moreano showcases progress in both areas. He recognized immediately that Moore was covered, as was Velus Jones. When he came to Cole Kmet, he knew the type of pass necessary to get it over the 6’5 frame of Tremaine Edmunds. Those are throws the big boys make.

Doing it in shorts is one thing. Justin Fields must show he can accomplish the same thing in pads against defenses actively scheming to stop him. There were instances last year he did it. Some of his best throws came off quick progressions from the pocket. The guy is capable of playing the position at a high level. It’s about finding consistency. That is the hardest part. A stronger supporting cast (on paper) should help this season. If the Bears get the guy they’re seeing right now, it will be a good year.
