Justin Fields isn’t an emotional guy, at least not in the traditional sense. Nobody would mistake him for being the fiery, outspoken type. His demeanor comes across as reserved and even-keel. That doesn’t mean teammates don’t see him as a leader. They voted him captain for a reason. Still, it’s always interesting to see those few choice moments when his true feelings surface through seemingly minor quotes.
That was true again this week. Jeff Joniak sat down with the Bears quarterback for a Player Profile episode on YouTube. Fields talked about his progress in the new offense and how national perception seems to have changed after his strong preseason finish in Cleveland. The QB shrugged it off, knowing their opinions would’ve remained unchanged if he’d played well. However, his demeanor shifted when Joniak asked him about Getsy. Fields had nothing but glowing words to say.
“Luke’s probably one of the smartest coaches I’ve ever had. Already taught me a lot and we haven’t even been together for half of a year yet. So I’m just looking forward to building together with him, looking forward to learning from him, and continue to get better.”
Justin Fields clearly thinks Getsy was the right choice.
Many experts criticized head coach Matt Eberflus for the hire back in January. While Getsy had plenty of credibility as a passing game coordinator with the Green Bay Packers, many felt his lack of experience calling plays was a concern. Fields would likely be served best by having somebody with a strong track record in that department. Eberflus didn’t care. He’d studied Getsy for a long time. People he trusted around the league spoke highly of the 37-year-old. Most importantly, he had knowledge of the wide-zone offense the head coach wanted to run in Chicago.
One thing is for sure. Justin Fields is happy that decision was made. He and Getsy hit it off immediately. The young coordinator made it clear his goal was to mold the offense to his quarterback’s strengths. His ability to speak and teach the position’s language has already been shown in brief snippets during the preseason. There is work to be done. Actual progress won’t be seen for months. Still, Fields sounds more confident than ever that he is trending in the right direction.
