The offseason for GM Ryan Poles already got off to a bad start when Larry Ogunjob failed his physical last month. Now it somehow is getting worse as police arrested wide receiver Byron Pringle down in Florida. According to TMZ, it stemmed from him doing donuts in his sports car on a local street with his child in the back seat. All on a suspended driver’s license. Not a great look for somebody that has done a good job staying out of trouble during his NFL career.
“Chicago Bears WR Byron Pringle was arrested Saturday in Florida after police say they busted him doing donuts in his sports car on a suspended license, with a child in the car, TMZ Sports has learned.
And, cops say Pringle was uncooperative … becoming “verbally confrontational” with them during the stop.”
The good news is nobody was hurt in the incident. This isn’t the type of situation similar to domestic violence or drug-related issues. It would be a considerable shock if Pringle were suspended for this unless his confrontation with the officers on the scene turned ugly. Details remain forthcoming. That doesn’t make the incident any less irresponsible. The receiver is 28-years old. He has a history of off-the-field issues dating back to his time in college. He should know better by now.
It would be a surprise if any suspension is leveled against him for this.
Far worse offenses saw players only get fined. One thing is clear. Poles is in desperate need of some good public relations. Bears fans were already riding him for not doing enough to help Justin Fields this offseason. Now the top receiving target he secured to do exactly that gets himself in trouble before taking a single snap.
To be honest most people never expected Byron Pringle to be the next Ja’Marr Chase or anything but he was still part of their offensive plans. This won’t get him off on the right foot inside that locker room. Not with Fields or his fellow receivers. He should be grateful it wasn’t a lot worse. One can only hope the punishment isn’t too severe and he’ll be ready for training camp in July.
