Justin Fields was easily the most anticipated preseason debut in Chicago Bears history. More than Mitch Trubisky or anybody else. This was both a byproduct of his success at Ohio State as well as the Bears’ tortured history at quarterback. Fans were desperate for him to show signs that he can be their guy. After a slow start, the rookie didn’t disappoint. He ended the first half with a quick drive that enabled Cairo Santos to hit a 53-yard field goal.
Then in the second half, he led back-to-back touchdown drives. The first capped by an eight-yard scramble and the other on a 30-yard touchdown pass to Jesse James. That doesn’t include the myriad of strong plays he had from a 25-yard shot to Rodney Adams on a well-placed throw and a 21-yard scramble that showcased his significant speed. More than anything though? What stood out the most was his calm and poise. For a rookie, Fields never looked overly rattled. Even during those early struggles in the first half.
Don’t be fooled though.
The young man was excited. He was spotted smiling multiple times on the sideline. After the Bears added another field goal late in the game, they held on to win 20-13. That capped an impressive comeback after falling behind 13-0. When the game ended, Fields was spotted walking towards the locker room. Cameras caught up with that smile spread wide as he engaged cheering Bears fans in a pretty cool moment.
This serves as a reminder. Justin Fields loves football. More importantly? He loves winning. It doesn’t matter if the games are meaningless. Winning is winning to him and he’s going to enjoy it whenever it happens. Fans caught a glimpse of that mentality during the game. When the game getting more heated, he tends to bring out his best. It is going to be so much fun watching him develop in the coming months.
