Most of the focus for the Chicago Bears’ 2021 draft was Justin Fields. Hardly a surprise. Quarterbacks tend to always get the attention. Especially 1st rounders. Yet he wasn’t the only pick the team made. In fact, he wasn’t the only one they traded up for either. Teven Jenkins was another major target in the 2nd round. Somebody the Bears liked so much they envision him as their potential left tackle of the future.

When watching the tape? Yeah, it’s not hard to see why they like him. Jenkins has the athleticism and quick feet for a left tackle in the NFL. However, that isn’t what got so many draft experts to fall in love with him. It was his reputation as a mauler. Somebody who delighted in driving defenders into the turf. No clip was more famous than him driving Texas outside linebacker Joseph Ossai clear off the field and directly into the Longhorns bench. It was arguably the best blocking clip of any offensive lineman in the entire draft.

One the Bears brass seemed to love.

During their first episode of 1920 Football Drive on YouTube, cameras caught everybody in the draft room reacting to the Jenkins pick. Their excitement was almost a strong as it was for Fields. The best part though was when NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah ran through his evaluation of the Oklahoma State tackle. He of course showed that exact clip. The reaction from the Bears’ draft room was appropriate.

Teven Jenkins comes across as a soft-spoken young man. He doesn’t have many words to offer. Don’t let that fool you. This guy is an animal in games. He almost takes it as a personal affront whenever a defender touches the quarterback at his expense. This is likely why he said he’s not above doing anything possible to prevent it. That includes intentionally holding if necessary. This is exactly the sort of person the Bears want protecting Fields’ blindside.
