Just one day left to go. The NFL draft is at hand and Chicago Bears fans are hyped. Not just because the team is back in the 1st round for the first time since 2018. There is also the strong possibility the team will take a quarterback early. This will mark the second time in four years they could draft a QB in the 1st round. Would this finally be the time they end up landing somebody good?
That depends on who they get. Current projections have five quarterbacks going within the first 10 picks on Thursday. Three in the top three to Jacksonville, New York, and San Francisco. After that, assumptions are the remaining two go somewhere between #6 and #10 unless somebody moves up to #4. Could the Bears be one of those teams? Possibly, but some aren’t so sure.
One insider though believes they won’t have to.
Benjamin Allbright of Pro Football Network released his annual mock draft. The only one he does per year and it reportedly involves all of the inside information he has. The results he came up with were eye-opening. He has North Dakota State’s Trey Lance going #3 to the 49ers. Then the New England Patriots will move up to #8 for Justin Fields of Ohio State. Yet the best part for Bears fans is yet to come.

20. Chicago Bears
Mac Jones, QB, Alabama
That’s right. Allbright believes if Jones doesn’t go #3 as many expect, he’ll end up falling out of the top 10 entirely and right into the waiting arms of the Bears. So not only do they land one of the top five guys. They get him without having to surrender anything extra in a move up. That is pretty favorable news. It would enable the Bears to use their remaining picks to fill out the rest of the roster while also maintaining their future picks as well.
Allbright Chicago Bears prediction should be taken seriously
His 2020 mock draft offers plenty of evidence why. He correctly predicted a specific player to a specific team 11 times in it. If that weren’t enough, he also nailed a team targeting a specific position an additional seven times. So it’s safe to say his information is pretty solid. Now this year is difficult because of how volatile the draft class is due to the pandemic opt-outs and lack of medicals. Still, he seems fairly confident Jones is in danger of falling.
Opinions on the Alabama quarterback are mixed. Many love his intelligence, leadership, and competitiveness. His accuracy and touch are arguably the best in the entire class. So what’s the problem. Jones isn’t what one would call a physical freak. He’s on the thinner side, boasts an okay arm, and can move but isn’t a natural runner. Most feel he has the lowest ceiling of the top five quarterbacks.
That would explain why he ends up being the one to fall.
Not that the Chicago Bears would fret too much. Jones’ style of play fits what head coach Matt Nagy likes in quarterbacks. Charismatic, cerebral, and accurate. A good decision-maker. For some that is more valuable than being able to throw the ball really far or run fast. After what the Bears just experienced with Mitch Trubisky, they no doubt would prefer somebody who can hit the open man. Jones can do that.
