George McCaskey Laying The Groundwork For Possible Bears Shakeup?

George McCaskey isn’t speaking to the media, so it’s difficult to gauge where his thinking is at with just over a month left in the 2020 season. His Chicago Bears went from 5-1 to 5-6 and are slowly falling out of the playoff picture. It’s easily one of the biggest collapses in team history. One that just got punctuated by a humiliating 41-25 loss to Green Bay.

Coming out of that debacle, it was reported that McCaskey is furious. Not just because of that loss but because of how the season has unfolded. GM Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy promised that things would be better this season. That they could get the offense, which finished 29th last year, fixed. After 10 games it ranks 31st in the NFL. Now the team is drifting toward another losing season.

As a result, Pace and Nagy are in serious trouble.

Remember that Pace is going into the final year of his contract in 2021. There is no way the Bears are going to let him sit there as a lame duck GM. Either they’ll give him an extension or they’ll cut him loose. Right now the latter is looking far more likely. Nagy? His record has gotten steadily worse since 2018 and so has his offense. There’s been no team improvement. He was always a package deal with Pace anyway.

So what happens if McCaskey cleans house? The key part will be finding the right GM to lead this team into the future. According to a source, it’s being made clear he wants this thing built right. Anybody who gets the job will be told there are no restrictions. No need to keep anybody or release anybody. They will have the authority and time to build the organization in whatever way necessary to make a consistent winner.

Initial signs indicate George McCaskey is taking full control of this

Remember he took over the Bears as team chairman in 2011 for his late brother Michael McCaskey. This despite having no background in running a football organization. So it was only natural he was going to lean on people who’d been there longer than him. Specifically, team president Ted Phillips who’d been in that position since 1999.

However, 2020 will mark the 10th season George has been in charge. As Jeff Hughes mentioned above, it seems he’s grown much more comfortable in his position. Enough to where he isn’t afraid to consider conducting an organizational overhaul personally. That may include not having Phillips involved in the decision-making process.

The last five weeks of this season will be an evaluation process.

George McCaskey wants to make sure he has a complete picture of the Nagy and Pace situation before making a final decision. Barring a huge rally down the stretch that results in a playoff appearance? The general feeling is both will be gone. From that point forward, the pendulum could swing in any number of directions. It could be the most unpredictable offseason Bears fans have seen in a long time.
