Former Bears Coach Sees Clear Winner After Watching Trubisky vs. Foles

-

A lot of people might not be interested in the opinion of Dave Wannstedt regarding the Chicago Bears these days. However, it’s important to know the former head coach of the team does know a thing or two about quarterback competitions. He held one of the most prominent in franchise history back in the mid-1990s between Erik Kramer and Steve Walsh. So he understands the importance of Trubisky vs. Foles and the decision head coach Matt Nagy has to make.

Wannstedt accepted an invitation from the team to watch practice over the weekend. So he had a front row seat for the action between the two quarterbacks. Most media members to this point think the battle has been relatively even. Maybe Trubisky has a slight edge in terms of better practices at 3-2. Still, there’s no real separation yet in their mind.

Does Wannstedt agree? Not entirely. During an appearance on Mully & Haugh for 670 The Score, the former coach believes this battle is already decided. In his mind, Foles wasn’t brought in to actually compete for the starting job. He was more of an incentive to get Trubisky’s attention.

Trubisky vs. Foles never had a chance after preseason was cut

The reality is the NFL kind of cuts the legs out from under the Bears this year. Not out of anything intentional. Just the craziness of the real world forcing their hand. When COVID-19 became such a dangerous threat, the league had to change up their plans. By far the biggest was cutting out the entire preseason. Normally that wouldn’t have been a huge issue for the Bears.

However, with a quarterback competition to run it was a brutal setback. Now Nagy has no way to measure the two against each other in actual game situations. That film would’ve been invaluable in helping the staff make a decision. This left them with training camp practices as their only option. It’s hard to see how Foles, with so little preparation time doing enough to overtake Trubisky like that.

Would things have been different with a preseason? Maybe. In the end, this is the only road the Bears could travel.
