The Chicago Bears did what they could to help the 29th ranked offense improve this offseason. They brought in Nick Foles to compete with Mitch Trubisky at quarterback. Jimmy Graham and Cole Kmet arrived to overhaul tight end. Ted Ginn Jr. and Darnell Mooney bring more speed to the receiver position. The obvious question is whether that’s enough. It still feels like a unit that lacks star power outside of Allen Robinson. So why not try for Josh Gordon?
Wait, what?
A lot of outside voices continue to encourage the team to take calculated risks on some big names still available in free agency. Antonio Brown is the most obvious. The former All-Pro remains unsigned after his self-destruction last year. Another is Gordon. Evan Massey, owner of the NFL Analysis Network was the latest to encourage the Bears to take a chance on the 29-year old who awaits his next opportunity.
“Mitchell Trubisky will begin the season as the starter barring an unforeseen change. Nick Foles is also on the roster after being acquired this offseason via trade.
Chicago has a high-powered offense when it is running on all cylinders. Matt Nagy would welcome more playmakers if he can get them. Ryan Pace might have to consider signing Gordon.
Gordon would slide in behind Allen Robinson III and possibly Anthony Miller. He would form a deadly trio of receivers and would be well worth the risk for the Bears.”
People need to stop this Josh Gordon nonsense already
Here’s the issue. Why do people continue to see Gordon through rose-tinted glasses? There is no denying the receiver has talent. He also has an inherent knack for sabotaging his own career. This guy had one great season in the NFL and that was seven years ago. He’s only played one full season in his career and that was as a rookie in 2012. Since 2014, he’s missed a multitude of games due to repeated substance abuse violations.

Why should the Bears or any team for that matter trust that something will be different this year? He isn’t the same player he was back then and never will be. He’s just a big name clinging to past glory at this point. GM Ryan Pace said the best ability is “availability” in the NFL. Gordon does not have that. This is one of those cases where the risk isn’t worth the reward. Nothing about the guy fits with what this team is about.
