Which Draft QB Fits Bears the Best? Top Analyst Drops His Pick

-

Will the Chicago Bears draft a quarterback? It might not be the most important question people are asking, but it’s one that must be asked. Right now the position appears relatively stable. They have Mitch Trubisky and Nick Foles at the top battling for the starting job. Tyler Bray is back again to provide some depth. However, when looking beyond 2020 it gets a little muddier.

Trubisky will be a free agent unless the team picks up his 5th-year option, which is unlikely. Bray will be a free agent. Foles could also leave since the Bears installed a player option in his reworked contract. So they don’t have a lot of long-term stability at the present time. So it’s not entirely crazy they might target a QB at some point next week. The question is who?

Dane Brugler of The Athletic is widely respected as one of the best NFL draft analysts around. His draft guide is must-read material every year. Few do more comprehensive work into a class than him and his scouting reports are some of the best in the business. So when Adam Jahns and Adam Hoge asked on their podcast which QB might fit the Bears best in this class?

He had an answer ready.

“Jake Fromm I think gets kind of a bad rap because he doesn’t have a lot of what teams are looking for with the physical traits. You know 6’2, 220. Average size. Doesn’t move very well. Does okay as an athlete. His arm is the definition of average. But he’s so poised and he’s so good with his mechanics and he’s so smart. The intangibles are off the charts.

If he’s still around…I don’t know if you’d have to take him with either of the Bears’ two 2nd rounder, but if they have a trade back opportunity and they’re picking late 2nd or they do get back in the 3rd round? Jake Fromm would really be appealing to me as a player that…it would be hard to pass on him. His rhythm, his timing. You can win with a player like that.”

Fromm does have Chicago Bears written all over him

It’s rather fitting that Brugler picked Fromm. He makes so much sense in a number of ways. Obviously his outstanding character and leadership traits will be things that the Bears look for. He did almost nothing but win while at Georgia, reaching their first national championship game in program history. He claimed 36 victories in his time there and was 21-3 in the SEC. That isn’t something to just be shrugged off.

Then there is the fact he goes to Georgia. GM Ryan Pace has an undeniable affinity for players from that program. Two of his 1st round picks to date were from there (Leonard Floyd and Roquan Smith). Not to mention a few others. Last but not least, his pro comparisons have included the name Chase Daniel multiple times. Everybody knows how Matt Nagy felt about the former Bears backup. So yeah. Fromm is definitely a name that should be kept in mind when the draft starts for them on April 24th.
