Ryan Pace can never be called somebody who does things halfway. Despite declaring that 2019 was a major disappointment for the Chicago Bears, he was immediately asked about the future of quarterback Mitch Trubisky. The GM didn’t waver in the slightest, declaring that it’s the team’s intention to retain him as their starter. It is either an incredibly bold or stupid move. There is no in-between. One thing is clear though. He’s going to stand by his guy. One has to respect that if nothing else.
Head coach Matt Nagy, for his part, didn’t seem the least bit perturbed by the idea. He nodded along with everything Pace said. He seems to believe that while this season was disappointing, there is a belief that a little more time and work will finally start to yield considerable results with Trubisky. There is also a belief that improvements across the rest of the roster, especially the offensive line and tight end positions, will definitely help make things easier for him.
Ryan Pace will stake everything on one more dice roll
Truth be told, this isn’t a big surprise. Pace made his stance on Trubisky clear when he traded up to get him in 2017. That’s how much conviction the GM had on the quarterback even back then. He believes that the 25-year old made some progress this season, even if the numbers don’t show it. One of the hardest things to do with a young quarterback is have patience with them. He is willing to see this thing through, even if others aren’t.
That may not be what fans want to hear, but it’s the reality. Pace and Nagy are ready to stake their jobs on Trubisky seeing the light. There is no doubt that 2020 will involve all three men fighting for their jobs. So there will definitely be a sense of urgency, if nothing else. Pace did indicate that some changes might come to the depth behind Mitch at quarterback. Perhaps the team will look to get a little more proven veteran in that spot. Maybe even a rookie draft pick. Either way though, it will remain Trubisky’s show.
