Bengals Just Cut the Bears’ Ideal Danny Trevathan Solution

-

The Chicago Bears defense was dealt a tough blow this past week. Danny Trevathan, their star linebacker and team leader suffered what appeared to be a gruesome left elbow injury against the Detroit Lions. While the team has not yet made a definitive decision on his status, most believe he is likely headed to injured reserve. A tough break as that now makes two vital pieces along with Akiem Hicks that the defense has lost.

However, the Bears can’t afford to cry and moan about it. They have to move forward. Odds are Nick Kwiatkoski will become the starter moving forward. Especially after his outstanding play the past two games where he’s seen significant snaps. That said, the team has to consider finding more quality depth just in case injury strikes again or another problem comes up. Thankfully, they may have caught a break.

Word came out via Tyler Dragon of The Enquirer that the Cincinnati Bengals were cutting linebacker Preston Brown. While this isn’t a surprise given how poorly their defense has played, it is a potential stroke of good fortune for the Bears.

Preston Brown can plug that Danny Trevathan hole

Brown is 27-years old and has been the starting middle linebacker for the Bengals the past two seasons. While not a premier athlete, his instincts and toughness have continuously stood out. One could argue that he’s always been a better fit as an inside linebacker in a 3-4 defense. A position he played during his first three seasons from 2014 to 2016 under Rex Ryan in Buffalo. During that time he racked up over 350 tackles, three interceptions, two forced fumbles, and a sack. He also didn’t miss a game.

With him being cut, this is a prime opportunity for the Bears to get a quality player at a cheap price. Brown should be able to step in right away and contribute. His experience and steadiness would be welcome with Trevathan’s presence likely gone. His downhill, aggressive style might also fit well with defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano who isn’t afraid to bring that position on frequent blitzes.
