Mitch Trubisky the MVP? Zach Miller Sees It Happening

-

A lot of people laughed when Las Vegas oddsmakers put Mitch Trubisky among a list of names for betting on winning the NFL Most Valuable Player award. That guy. The one who suffered from erratic deep throws and occasional bad decisions? He’d beat out Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Drew Brees, and Aaron Rodgers to win that coveted prize? Please. Most national experts dismissed the idea as nothing more than fun speculation with no basis in reality.

One person who isn’t laughing is Zach Miller. The former Chicago Bears tight end and one of Trubisky’s best friends hasn’t hidden his admiration for the player the quarterback is. He stated openly on camera to Matt Nagy that once Trubisky put it all together, it would be “a beautiful thing.” While 2018 wasn’t a great year, by Bears standards it was one of the best of the Super Bowl era. He accounted for 27 touchdowns, over 3,800 total yards and was named a Pro Bowl alternate.

Not a bad accomplishment. Miller though genuinely believes Trubisky is destined for greater heights. So much so that coming into the 2019 season, he made his expectations to the quarterback clear in no uncertain terms. He explained what they were on the McNeil & Parkins Show on 670 The Score.

“I mean I told him going into the season that I don’t think there’s any reason why he couldn’t win the NFL MVP award. I don’t see why in our offense, and the type of people he has around him, with his capability he can’t do that.”

Mitch Trubisky has the talent to reach that level

It was never a question of talent for Trubisky. He has everything required to be great in the NFL. He’s got good size, a strong right arm, and may be one of the two or three best scramblers in the league. He looks like the early versions of Steve Young from the 1980s. A gifted athlete who was a fantastic runner and had great moments as a thrower, but was still figuring out how to become a passer. Trubisky is working hard to conquer that last and most difficult part of his game.

Hopes are high that great familiarity in the offense under Nagy is poised to unlock that potential. People haven’t quite seen it in training camp, though that could be due to facing the #1 defense in the NFL every day. The truth is Trubisky has worked tirelessly to improve. Coaches and teammates insist his mastery of the system is night and day from where he was last year. That familiarity will breed greater confidence in his decision-making and execution.

Given how well he played last year without those advantages, it stands to reason Miller isn’t so crazy to think Trubisky is poised to explode.
