Coaches and Teammates Insist Mitch Trubisky Has Changed

-

People can talk about how the Chicago Bears can go further in the playoffs this year. The defense can maintain their dominance. Running the ball better. Yet everybody knows the truth. The future of this team hinges on Mitch Trubisky. He stepped up last year in several ways, but it’s clear the key to winning a championship rests on if he can raise his game another notch.

The team is doing everything in their power to make it happen. They revamped the running back position with players who can catch the football. They added a host of new, athletic faces to the wide receiver position. Bobby Massie was re-signed to keep the offensive line intact. However the biggest benefit is consistency within the system.

Head coach Matt Nagy is known for running a scheme that is complex and difficult for quarterbacks. It takes time to master. That much was clear at times in 2018. With every start and every snap though, Trubisky was gaining a greater grasp of its intricacies. Going into OTAs this year, it has become apparent to both coaches and teammates that his mastery of the system has truly begun.

Mitch Trubisky has every reason to feel confident

Jay Cutler once said that true mastery of an offense doesn’t happen until Year 3. Sadly he never got to experience that in Chicago. He had two with Mike Martz and two with Marc Trestman. The rest of the years were one-and-dones. Trubisky should end up avoided such an issue. That is a big reason why the Bears made Nagy the head coach. They wanted system consistency.

The young quarterback should be feeling good. He played one of the best games of his career in the postseason, throwing for over 300 yards and a touchdown against Philadelphia. He had them in position to win the game before Cody Parkey ruined it. If anything it might be a blessing in disguise. It’s left a chip on his shoulder to prove to everybody that he won’t need a kicker next time.

All signs out of practice thus far hint that he is leading tape meetings and has every call and adjustment at the line down. The more he practices, the more he masters it. With that his confidence will only grown. If he was able to play as well as he did last year without fully knowing his job, try to imagine what will happen when he does.
