Next Chicago Bears Opponent Has Reached Historic Levels of Bad

-

Defeating the New York Jets was a welcome sigh of relief for the Chicago Bears. The halfway point is at hand for the team and they have a chance to reach it with a winning record for the first time since 2013. They would also equal their win total of last season, a fitting testament to the work done by GM Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy.

Of course, one hurdle still remains. That being the Buffalo Bills. This team remains one of the most confounding in the NFL this year. They came into the season viewed as one of the worst in the league due to a massive roster purge that sent many veteran packing or saw others retire. However, time has shown they still have a pretty good defense. One that smothered the Vikings in a big upset in Minnesota earlier this season.

Yet it’s not the defense that has turned that team into a virtual NFL laughing stock. It’s their offense. The unit was already a big question mark after losing three starting offensive linemen this offseason. Then they traded their starting quarterback in favor of an untested rookie. That rookie Josh Allen has since been knocked out with an elbow injury.

The receivers and tight ends aren’t all that great. Now even their main backup QB Derek Anderson, signed just a couple weeks ago could be out with injury as well. This would explain why the offense could be one of the worst of the modern era.

Chicago Bears defense may have an excuse to rest Khalil Mack again

Last week the Bears made the decision to sit star pass rusher Khalil Mack against the Jets. It was primarily done to rest his injured ankle after an ineffective attempt to play on it against the Patriots. However, they likely felt they could get away with it because the Jets offense was badly banged up, missing several key weapons. The gamble paid off as the defense allowed just 10 points.

Looking ahead, it’s possible they could face a Bills offense working with their third-string quarterback in Nathan Peterman. A passer who has nine interceptions in less than 100 career attempts. Nothing is a given in the NFL, but if the Bears chose to rest Mack for another week nobody would even bat an eye. This Bills team is grasping at straws at this point following their disheartening loss to the Patriots in which they managed just six points.
