The Chicago Bears didn’t build their final training camp roster in a traditional sense this year. One facet that went unnoticed was how they didn’t sign any tryout players. This is because NFL teams were not permitted to conduct tryouts due to the COVID-19 situation. Something that remained in place for months as several undrafted players who probably should’ve been signed already remain unemployed.

It seems that is finally about to change. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the league has officially lifted the prohibition on players trying out for teams. This means the Bears can start bringing in both rookies and veterans for meetings whenever they wish.

To that end, here are five names the team should consider bringing in.

Players the Chicago Bears should target for tryouts

Mason Fine (QB, North Texas)

Of all the young QBs who didn’t end up on a roster around the NFL, Fine was one of the biggest surprises. Here’s a guy who threw for over 12,000 yards at North Texas and won some big football games. While undersized at 5’11, he is mobile and boasts a decent enough arm to create big plays. Just one of those guys who thrives as an improviser and has the tools to become a quality backup.

GeWhite Stallworth (OT, Louisiana Tech)

This is one big dude. Stallworth stands 6’8 at 320 lbs and plays like it. He moves people off the line in the run game, but that overshadows how surprisingly solid he is in pass protection. His technique is decent and he has a quick enough kick slide to handle NFL speed. The problem is his footwork needs cleaning up and he’ll be 25-years old this season. Based on pure talent though? He probably should’ve been drafted.

Dallas Warmack (OG, Oregon)

Football always runs in the family. The NFL has proven this time and again. Dallas Warmack is the younger brother of longtime guard Chance Warmack. While not as talented as his older sibling, the Oregon standout shows plenty of qualities worth exploring. He moves well, has strong technique, and shows the kind of power that opens up holes in the run game. All things the Bears covet right now.

Kevin Thurmon (DT, Arkansas State)

People always love a hometown story. Thurmon is a Chicago kid. After starting his college career at Ball State, he transferred to Arkansas State where he became a productive member of their defense. He finished with 4.5 sacks in 2019. While not the biggest guy, he has good power and balance in his lower body coupled with athleticism and effort. The kind of guy who can end up becoming more than the sum of his parts.

Sage Lewis (ILB, FIU)

He isn’t the biggest linebacker in the world but the Bears have shown they don’t covet size as much as they like instincts, intelligence and athleticism. Lewis has those traits. He plays with lots of energy, flying to the football. He has qualities as a blitzer and tackles well. He’ll need help keeping blockers off him, but the guy has the same traits as a Danny Trevathan.
