Draft Prospects Using a Clever Tactic to Gain Favor With Chicago Bears

-

Anybody who has followed the NFL draft for long enough understands it’s not a perfect process. Those who know it well realize that simply being talented or having good film aren’t enough to warrant being taken in high rounds. It’s also about making a good impression. Mitch Trubisky is a perfect example in regards to the Chicago Bears. His ability to impress GM Ryan Pace with during interviews was a vital step in him being selected #2 overall back in 2017.

Teams want these prospects to show them why they’re worth taking.

That could prove difficult this year though. With the COVID-19 virus wreaking havoc across the country, players haven’t been able to meet with teams in person. Such limited contact via Skype or FaceTime means the chances to make a strong pitch harder. However, that hasn’t stopped some from adapting to the situation.

Pace explained to Larry Mayer of Chicagobears.com what some prospects have done to show how committed they are to getting drafted.

Subscribe to the BFR Youtube channel and ride shotgun with Dave and Ficky as they break down Bears football like nobody else.

“Some of them have been really proactive and they’ll have a dry erase board with dry erase markers ready to go to get up and draw whatever you need,” Pace said. “Most of them are taking notes, and some of them will show you their notes at the end of interview. It’s neat to see some of the preparation and forethought that’s taking place with some of these prospects.”

Chicago Bears always love players who work hard

Preparation is half the battle to succeed in the NFL. The Bears have always preferred to target players known for their strong work ethics as much as their talent. So it’s not a surprise kids being ready with notes and whiteboards would resonate with Pace. That tells him they’re committed to doing whatever it takes to win. If the Bears draft them, that is kind of player they’re getting. The team is what will be most important.

Whether they truly believe that or it’s just a clever tactic to make an impression? That’s impossible to say. This is where the judgment of Pace and his scouts will come into play. Historically the GM has a fairly decent track record in the 2nd round. Cody Whitehair and Eddie Goldman have become really good players. James Daniels and Anthony Miller showed a lot of progress last season.

Hopefully that track record will hold true for another year.
