George McCaskey Seemed Lukewarm When Pressed on Trubisky

-

GM Ryan Pace was not going to let things linger regarding the biggest question of the upcoming 2020 offseason. What is going to happen with Mitch Trubisky? He stated without any sort of doubt that the quarterback will remain the starter next season. Something head coach Matt Nagy was on board with. It’s their belief that the 25-year old is close to finally unlocking the potential he’s shown for the past two years. If they can fix the issues that cropped up around him this past year, then it will be okay. So what does George McCaskey think?

The team chairman sat down with president Ted Phillips after Nagy and Pace were finished. He made it clear ownership was obviously disappointed by the season and expected improvement next year. He expressed continued confidence in his GM and head coach to get the team where they want to go. However, his demeanor changed ever so slightly when the topic of Mitch Trubisky came up.

McCaskey was asked about the organization backing the young quarterback. His answer felt less like a vote of confidence and more like a swift dodging of the question. The first part of his answer especially spoke volumes.

George McCaskey sounds like a man unconvinced

Keep in mind this is the same man who threw his full support behind Jay Cutler for so many years. That he wasn’t more outspoken in support of his young quarterback sends a certain kind of message. One that indicates he might not be quite as on board with the kid being the starter again in 2020. It’s hard to blame him. Many of the problems that surfaced this past season all seem to trace back to the quarterback. Trubisky regressed in every notable category and failed to deliver in any games against good teams.

That is not the sign of a franchise player. McCaskey may not be a football expert, but he has eyes and they seem to tell him that it might be best to hold back any sort of encouragement in regards to Trubisky as the answer for this team at QB. Of course, nothing is set in stone just yet. Despite what Pace may have said, the Bears will have two other wide open roster spots at the position this offseason. Those could be filled with a pair of arms that might be equipped to push Trubisky from behind.

Something people are clamoring for. Time will tell.
