Rich Eisen Believes Matt Nagy Will Keep Trubisky the Starter in 2020

-

Rich Eisen isn’t an insider compared to others in the football business, but few men have been around the game for as long as him. He remains one of the top analysts for NFL Network and is plugged in with relationship to GMs, head coaches, and players alike. So this isn’t exactly a guy who just shoots his mouth off just for the sake of it. That’s why what he had to say about the Chicago Bears on his latest episode of The Rich Eisen Show might end up causing fans to give into despair.

It’s no secret Mitch Trubisky has been a major disappointment in 2019. After ending 2018 with such promise in the playoffs, he has regressed in every way imaginable. Head coach Matt Nagy has endured the brunt of criticism for this and the general belief is his seat is starting to get warm as the Bears slip towards another losing season. It feels like the only course forward is to find another option at quarterback.

Eisen though doesn’t think Nagy will do that.

“I’m telling you. At Matt Nagy’s end-of-season press conference…the 6-10 head coach of the Chicago Bears is going to step to the podium and say Mitchell Trubisky’s our guy. I’m telling you that’s gonna happen. Everybody out here thinks that it’s not. It’s gonna happen.”

Why in the world would he think that would happen? How in the world could he sell that to the fans?

“Because service to your fanbase is ‘Look at what happened last year.’ This year just didn’t work out for whatever reason XYZ. This guy was not there, that was banged up. We’re gonna get better players at this position, that position. I’m warning you, Bears fans…It’s coming.”

Rich Eisen basically thinks egos will prevent change

Essentially what Eisen is saying is that there’s no way Nagy and GM Ryan Pace will be able to admit they both failed at their jobs. Pace for picking Trubisky in the first place and Nagy for being unable to elevate him to become a dependable starting quarterback. Instead they will go all-in on 2020. They’ll use every resource possible to fortify the roster around Trubisky and give it one more shot, praying that he finally starts to blossom as a true passer.

Some might call that admirable. Others would call it reckless and stupid. Yet that’s what Eisen believes is going to happen. He doesn’t think those two have the guts to make the decision to abandon their project and move on. Honestly given their historical stubborn streaks and bad tendencies to stick with players and plans a little too long? He might not be wrong, and that’s the most terrifying part of all this.
