Matt Nagy Makes His Stance on Future of Trubisky Clear

-

Matt Nagy added unintended controversy to what has become a lost season for the Chicago Bears when he pulled Mitch Trubisky in the 4th quarter with three minutes left. The team was only down 17-7, so it’s not like the game was completely out of reach by that point. A quick score and an onside kick could get them to at least overtime. Nagy was seen speaking into Mitch’s ear before the sequence that sent backup Chase Daniel onto the field. It was reported shortly after that Trubisky was dealing with a hip issue.

A report that many people thought wasn’t true.

They felt it was a convenient excuse for Nagy to get the quarterback out of the game. The coach refuted those claims both after it ended and in his Monday press conference. Nagy says Trubisky suffered a hip pointer on a sack in the 2nd quarter and the injury grew worse as the game wore on. Towards the end of the game, it became obvious that the kid couldn’t move too well and his throws were becoming more and more inaccurate. So the decision was made to pull him.

There isn’t going to be any changes. Whenever Trubisky is feeling healthy again, he remains the starting quarterback for the Bears.

Matt Nagy really doesn’t have another option

The reality is Nagy has no alternatives. Chase Daniel is a veteran backup and not the future of any team. Tyler Bray is on the practice squad and is a career backup as well. Benching Trubisky for either of them would be a pointless endeavor now that the team’s playoff hopes are shattered. Might as well give Trubisky the games that remain to see if he can light the fire. If not, then the team can say without fear that they saw the thing through for as long as they could. In the end, he wasn’t the guy.

It will be time to find a new quarterback. One who can hopefully execute Nagy’s system and save his job, which will almost certainly be on the line in 2020. The same goes for GM Ryan Pace.
