Ryan Pace really doesn’t get it. He doesn’t recognize quarterback talent. People really don’t need to be told that at this point. He signed Mike Glennon for $45 million, gave up four picks including #2 overall for Mitch Trubisky, and then traded a 4th round pick and $21 million for Nick Foles. There is no way the Chicago Bears GM could possibly make this worse.

Strike that. Reverse it. Pace always finds a way to top himself. That became true when the latest string of player visits was reported on Wednesday. The Bears had two wide receivers in for workouts along with a quarterback. This isn’t a big surprise. Both Foles and Trubisky are injured. Neither can be considered locks to play in two weeks against the Packers. They need some depth. Who is the guy they seem to like?

DeShone Kizer. Yep, that guy.

The one all Bears fans remember from that epic opening night at Lambeau Field when Khalil Mack stole his lunch money. A former 2nd round pick, the Notre Dame standout seemed like a true NFL talent. The problem was his processing speed wasn’t fast enough. That was the biggest concern teams had with him in addition to some attitude questions.

Cleveland traded him to Green Bay after just one season and he’s been navigating the journeyman circuit ever since. While the political issues have been hammered to death, it’s incredible they think this guy is a better option than Colin Kaepernick. Alas, that’s a pointless argument. While signing him doesn’t mean he will play, it’s beside the point.

Ryan Pace is merely reminding everybody how badly he blew it

He had a chance to draft Dak Prescott in 2016. He opted for Nick Kwiatkoski, Deon Bush, and Deiondre Hall instead. A year later he took Trubisky over Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson. The evidence is overwhelming. Pace talks a good game but it’s beyond a doubt he is literally clueless when it comes to identifying quarterback talent.

Kizer is a symptom of this. It’s once again Pace going after physical talent rather than actual ability. This is the cardinal sin he can’t escape. The Bears have stayed patient with him for six seasons and have ended up almost back where they started in 2015. An old roster with aging stars and no quarterback. So one could argue that the entire sequence was a complete waste of time.

Six games remain the season.

Ryan Pace better hope the Bears can win a few of them. After starting 5-1, they sit at 5-5 at the bye. They’re in a complete freefall with the offense looking like one of the worst in franchise history. An offense he built entirely himself. Not to mention the head coach he hired looks incredibly overmatched by the job of trying to turn it around. A guy only gets so many extra chances. If this team misses the playoffs, it will mark the fifth time in six tries. How can they justify keep him as GM if that happens?

They can’t.
