The Chicago Bears continue to work their way through training camp and the preseason. Head coach Matt Nagy and his staff striving to find the best 53-man roster possible for their venture into the 2021 season. There is plenty to like. It sounds like the defense remains strong and deep in their front seven. The safety position looks solid too. Offensively they suddenly have three capable bodies at tight end and of course a reinforced QB position with Andy Dalton and Justin Fields.

That being said, there is always room for improvement. Nobody would say the Bears are close to competing with teams like Tampa Bay and Green Bay for the top spot in the NFC. That is why they cannot rest on what they have. GM Ryan Pace must always be on the lookout for ways to make this roster better. Even if only from a depth perspective.

His last chance to do that will come within the next 12 days. That is when teams will have to cut their rosters down to 53. Based on rumblings from across the league, here are some names the Bears should watch out for to become available.

Possible cuts the Chicago Bears should watch out for

David Sills (New York Giants)

It’s a bit surprising that Sills wasn’t drafted in 2019. Usually, when a guy scores 33 touchdowns in two seasons, it is worth at least a late draft choice. So what happened? Most likely his lack of speed (4.57/40) turned teams off. He failed to crack Buffalo’s roster as an undrafted free agent and has since spent time with the Giants. Word is he has impressed in training camp and was their most productive receiver in the preseason opener (3 catches for 49 yards). Unfortunately, he is caught in a bit of a logjam at receiver for them. The Bears could use somebody with size and reliable hands. Sills fits that profile.

Pierre Desir (Seattle Seahawks)

The Chicago Bears secondary is going through a considerable youth movement at cornerback. Jaylon Johnson looks great, but beyond him, it’s still question marks. It feels like the group could use a veteran presence. Desmond Trufant hasn’t really stood out thus far. Desir has probably been one of the more overlooked cornerbacks in the league the past couple of years. He had three interceptions in 2019 and again in 2020. This despite changing teams in the process. It doesn’t look like he’ll stick in Seattle. He should provide a little more stability and also some special teams help.

Forrest Lamp (Buffalo Bills)

Injuries haunted the former 2nd round pick through the first three seasons of his career. First with a knee injury as a rookie in 2017 and then a broken leg in 2019. Last year was the first where he started every game for the Los Angeles Chargers. By most accounts, he played quite well. Looking particularly good in pass protection. He was a part of why rookie QB Justin Herbert had such an outstanding season. It doesn’t sound like last season was enough to convince the Bills he should stay on their roster. The belief is he will be one of their final cuts when the dust settles. If so, the Bears need to consider him. They love linemen with versatility. Not only does Lamp play guard but he was a standout tackle in college too.

Geno Stone (Baltimore Ravens)

Safety can’t be call a pressing need for the Chicago Bears defense. However, when underrated talents become available it would be wise to consider them. Baltimore always has great depth on their roster. So good players can sometimes get cut. That might end up being the case for Stone. He flashed what he could do in the preseason win over New Orleans with two interceptions. Draft experts raised concerns about his lack of speed and 5’10 size. Yet his instincts and physicality are hard to ignore. He has the air of somebody who demands a roster spot. If Baltimore isn’t willing to give it to him, the Bears should seriously consider doing so.

Tanner Hudson (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

Tampa Bay is loaded offensively at every position. While great for them, it can also be good for teams who understand some good players might slip through the cracks. Hudson is one of them. He’s trapped at tight end behind Rob Gronkowski, O.J. Howard, and Cameron Brate. It isn’t likely he will make the roster. One must remember he was outstanding in the 2019 preseason, finishing second among all players with 245 yards and first with three touchdowns. A former quarterback, he is tall and athletic with a strong pair of hands. He would make a great TE4 behind Jesse James.
