Cole Kmet is 100% committed to the Chicago Bears. A personal dream come true for the young tight end having grown up in close proximity to the team. Football wasn’t his only sport though. He easily could’ve diverted towards baseball. He was quite a solid relief pitcher in college and had the attention of pro teams coming out of high school.

One of those teams was the Chicago White Sox. Back in 2017, they grew intrigued by the big kid and decided to invite him for a meeting at Guaranteed Rate Field. Depending on how it went, they might consider taking him in the upcoming MLB draft. Kmet was humbled by the experience. At the same time, he told Laura Screeden and Jeff Joniak that is was a bit difficult for him.

Why? The best reason ever.

“Actually I was talking to the White Sox for a little bit after my senior year of high school before the MLB draft that summer. I got to work out there at Guaranteed Rate (Field), which was pretty cool. Even though I’m a Cubs fan, that was a lot of fun for me. To kind of be able to experience that was pretty cool.”

Cole Kmet won’t have to worry about loyalties in football

It’s not a surprise Kmet was a Cubs guy. He was born in Lake Barrington and grew up in Arlington Heights. Both located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Smack in the middle of Cubs territory. One has to wonder what might’ve happened had that team come calling on him three years ago instead of the White Sox. The odds are probably good he might have heard his name called in the draft back in April.

The Bears are certainly happy things worked out the way they did. So is Kmet. He is thrilled to be a Bear and won’t have to worry about loyalties. He’s free to wear the navy blue on Sundays and support his Cubs during baseball season. Head coach Matt Nagy and the staff have big plans for him. It will be interesting to see how quickly he can assimilate the playbook without the benefit of OTAs or minicamps.
