It’s easy for Chicago Bears fans to count Mitch Trubisky out. Nobody can blame them. Every single piece of evidence up to this point suggests the 26-year old quarterback has no prayer of changing his fate by this point. No Bears quarterback has launched a career turnaround at the eleventh hour before. Trubisky has beaten the Packers just once the previous three years. Chicago boasts the 31st ranked offense through 10 games.

There isn’t much out there to offer hope. That is save for one source. Kyle Fuller probably understands the plight of his quarterback more than most.  At one point in his career, he too was viewed as a lost cause. A wasted 1st round pick. Fuller had a nice start during his rookie year but soon things began to slowly fall apart for him.

Things reached bottom by the end of 2015.

Matthew Stafford had just picked apart the defense for 298 yards and three touchdowns. Fuller was schooled all day long by Calvin Johnson. Just a few months later, the cornerback suffered a knee injury that eventually required surgery. He ended up missing the entire 2016 season. Like Trubisky, the Bears chose to pass on picking up his 5th-year option.

Expectations couldn’t have been lower going into 2017. Most felt he was probably gone after that year. Then a crazy thing happened. Fuller played well. Really well. Enough to where he went from bust to a brand new contract. He celebrated in 2018 by making All-Pro. It was one of the best career turnarounds in franchise history.

Is it so crazy to think Mitch Trubisky can do the same?

Sure he’s working on a much shorter timetable of just six games. Still, the opportunity is there. He has spent the past two months on the bench, watching his career flash before his eyes. This could well be his final opportunity to seize control of his future. Be it in Chicago or elsewhere. Many times an athlete tends to find the best in themselves when faced with that true do-or-die moment.

Of the final six games, four will be against some of the worst pass defenses in the NFL such as Detroit, Minnesota, Houston, and Jacksonville. Even Green Bay can’t be called anything close to a suffocating unit. They’ve looked vulnerable quite often this year. Yes, the Bears offense is bad but crazy things happen all the time. One upset of the Packers could give this team a legitimate jolt of momentum. Something Trubisky could take full advantage of.

That is how it happened for Fuller.

Nobody gave the Bears a prayer to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017. However, thanks to a big day from the running game and a strong defensive effort, Chicago prevailed in overtime. Fuller seemed to really step up his play after that game. Mitch Trubisky could do the same. Is it asking a lot? Sure it is. The narrative is set in stone by now. Everybody expects him to fail.

The only way to change it is by proving them wrong. By doing something he’s never done before. Being the main reason the Chicago Bears won a big must-win game.
