The Chicago Bears have a lot of decisions to make regarding their future. A lot of it will come to light after this upcoming rematch against the Green Bay Packers. A win puts them into the playoffs. A loss would mark the ninth time in 10 seasons they’ve failed to reach the postseason. Having it come at the hands of their biggest rival would certainly sting. At the heart of this entire swirling vortex is head coach Matt Nagy.

Speculation has run rampant over his future. It looked like the third-year coach was set to get fired after seeing the team suffer a six-game losing streak between the end of October and the beginning of December. The team has no life and his offense was one of the worst in the NFL. However, to his credit, Nagy managed to circle the wagons. Chicago came back firing and won their last three in a row. Much of that thanks to the revival of their offense which is averaging over 36 points per game in that stretch.

It appears this turnaround has convinced Bears ownership.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, expectations are Nagy will return for a fourth season in 2021 regardless of what happens in the few hours. This isn’t a huge surprise. Nagy is well-respected in the Bears locker room. Players love him. Team chairman George McCaskey is also a fan according to several reports. Combine that with two years remaining on his contract? It felt like nothing short of a complete collapse would see him get fired.

The bigger question revolves around GM Ryan Pace. His status with the organization is much more uncertain. He only has one year left on his current contract. This means the Bears have a decision to make. Do they give him some sort of extension to prevent a lame-duck status this coming offseason or do they make a change? Rumors are he’s in hotter water than Nagy due to a number of recent missteps but it’s unclear if he will be fired or not.

Matt Nagy bought himself time but little else

Make no mistake. This revelation is hardly a sign the head coach is in the clear. It’s merely a stay of execution at this point. He still has a lot to answer for. Namely his questionable decisions regarding the quarterback position and the offense in general. Benching Mitch Trubisky when he probably shouldn’t have. Relinquishing play calling to Bill Lazor and now apparently deciding to take it back in some form or fashion. It’s clear Nagy faces plenty of critiques regardless of how this season ends.

A win over the Packers in the season finale would certainly help his case. The head coach is a pitiful 1-4 against the Bears’ arch-rivals so far in his career. Another loss wouldn’t raise his standing much. That said, facts are facts. Nagy will finish 2020 with his third-straight season without a losing record. The first Bears head coach ever to accomplish that feat in the Super Bowl era.

Dumping somebody with that sort of track record can be dangerous.

The McCaskeys probably want to see how he continues to evolve as a head coach. It’s clear he has made strides in a number of areas as a leader. Do the Bears give him a chance to find his own quarterback? That will be answered this offseason. Whether Pace will be there with him is a bigger question at this point.
