Akiem Hicks vs. Germain Ifedi has already become a central focus of training camp. Mostly because the two have actually matched up pretty well in the trenches. According to offensive line coach Juan Castillo, the new right guard has held his own against the Pro Bowl defensive end on a number of snaps through the first three padded practices.
One can imagine some of those battles got a little heated physically and two didn’t mind jawing back and forth either. Two big dudes going at each other in the trenches? That is football personified. However, the one thing coaches have to make sure of is that it never becomes personal. Too many vicious collisions like that can lead to some bad feelings.
So it seems they decided to lighten things up a bit. At the end of practice, head coach Matt Nagy decided to hold a little competition. Both Hicks and Ifedi would go head-to-head again. Except this time fielding punts. Keep in mind both of these guys are north of 320 lbs. So one can imagine it was a sight to see.
They didn’t disappoint.
