Matt Eberflus Hints At Offensive Changes For Bears-Texans Game

-

Matt Eberflus isn’t an overly emotional guy. He tends to keep an even-keel approach on the field. However, it was apparent after the Chicago Bears’ defeat in Green Bay that he wasn’t happy. Lots of things went wrong in that game. The tackling on defense clearly irked him. As for the offense, only scoring 10 points and passing for 70 yards total wasn’t ideal. The one failure that grated Eberflus’ nerves isn’t what many might think.

During his appearance on the Bears Coaches Show, the head coach pointed out that a primary failure in Green Bay was not getting their top skill position guys more involved. Darnell Mooney has two catches for four yards in two games. Cole Kmet doesn’t have any catches at all. That is a problem. The Bears can’t hope to win if they can’t get their two most talented receiving weapons going. It sounds like that will be a primary focus going into the Houston game on Sunday.

Matt Eberflus and Luke Getsy are likely seeking easy completions.

Find ways to get the ball in Mooney and Kmet’s hands. This can be done in various ways, from slants to quick outs to curls and hitches. Get them some completions so they can establish a rhythm with Justin Fields. That should be made easier with play action. Houston’s run defense is terrible. David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert should have some success on the ground. If they can give Fields some play fakes, Mooney and Kmet will have premium opportunities to hit big plays.

It is at least good to hear Matt Eberflus acknowledge the problem. He didn’t give any generalization answers. He admitted outright that those two have to get the ball more. It sounds like he is determined to do so this Sunday. The Texans might be accommodating. They’ve proven vulnerable to deep speed. Fields loves to throw down the field. If his protection holds up, he may finally get himself on track.

Here’s the deal…Bears won the 1st quarter 7-3. The 2nd half was 3-3. Lighten up! The team is getting better!

I think this is kinda what we expected. Fields is in his first year as a starter, in a new offense, with a lot of new players. Will take a little time to gel. I expect to, hope to see, gradual improvements all season on both sides of the ball. Good to hear the coach acknowledged it. We’ll see. I think it will still be a tough game against the Texans. Go Bears!

don’t SLEEP on the Texans. Overlooking an ANY NFL team is a mistake. The bear’s are being overlooked…. so we should NOT fall into the same trap. Nothing is a given in the NFL. Did Indy in their wildest dreams think they’d be shutout? by the Jags? Did CVL think J E T S could score 14 points in 60 seconds? Did Buffalo think 14 seconds was a LOCK vs KC?
So I think the bear’s and the fan should assume NOTHING.

Get rid of Fields? You guys calling for Fields’ head at this point are gutless and mentally weak. The same naysayers who thought the Bears couldn’t win more than a game or two are now calling for a new QB because we didn’t beat the Packers. What? You thought they should have won that game? Gimme a break. This is a 3 year rebuild and we are two games in. Grab your a$$es and put them back in your pants. It’s going to take time. The defense needs an injection of talent in the next two drafts. The offense needs… Read more »

To be dominated by the Green Bay packers is a really sore spot for the Chicago Bears. They’ve got to become better in many ways. I realize this team is young and developing but the fundamental blocking and tackling in the GB game was sorely lacking. Other than the first quarter drive that gave them their only touchdown they looked lost out there and GB put a licking on them. I hope this is the low spot for the year and that the team gets back on track and develops into a competitive team the rest of the year!
