If there is one thing we’ve learned about the draft process over the past decade as exposure grows, it’s that general managers are prone to falling in love with prospects. Ryan Pace proved that in 2017 when he overrode many inside Halas Hall to take Mitch Trubisky. Ryan Poles is no different. Last year, it was obvious he adored Washington wide receiver Rome Odunze. It was so strong that he was making calls about trading up from #9 before assistant GM Ian Cunningham talked him out of it. There is no doubt the same could happen this year, too.
All it takes is the right player making the right impression.
It appears we’ve found out who it is. Draft insider Tony Pauline of Sportskeedia dropped some updates about what to expect in the 1st round. He uncorked a huge one about the Bears that suddenly puts many things in place.
Josh Conerly Jr. of Oregon could end up being chosen earlier than most predict, and the expected range for the junior is picks 10 to 25. And while the 10th pick, presently held by the Chicago Bears, seems early, I’m told it is a real possibility. The Bears are looking for a blocker who can play guard or tackle, and that perfectly describes Conerly. He’s presently the No. 1 guard on my board, yet many if not most teams project him at tackle. I’m told the Bears not only like his skill on the field, but they became enamored with Conerly when he visited the franchise. The three-year starter came across as a seasoned veteran and very professional. The other team that is very high on Conerly are the New Orleans Saints- though I’m told they would only take him if they trade back.
Conerly is a name that has hovered in the background for weeks.
Chicago held a top 30 visit with him back in March. It appears he made a big impression. Experts feel he was probably the most improved blocker of any 1st round prospect in the class by the end of 2024. He’s a good athlete, tough, and physical as a run-blocker. That mention of versatility also feels important after what Ben Johnson said at the start of free agency.

“‘Smart’ is a word that comes to mind, particularly with the interior players. We would love to have some versatility to our scheme, some multiplicity if you will.”
Ryan Poles has good advisors on this evaluation.
Offensive line coach Dan Roushar is one of the best in the business. The New Orleans Saints drafted three eventual Pro Bowl-caliber players while he was with the team in the 2010s. All were 1st round picks. Then you have Johnson himself, who helped the Detroit Lions acquire both Jonah Jackson and Penei Sewell. If they think Conerly is their kind of player, then taking him at #10 is easy to justify. He’s drawn comparisons to Buffalo Bills Pro Bowler Dion Dawkins. There is no doubt he has the capability to be an anchor on the offensive line for years. With questions surrounding both Braxton Jones (health/contract) and Joe Thuney (age), this is the sort of pick that gives the Bears excellent insurance.
