One Team Has Suddenly Emerged As Strongest Suitor For Cubs Free Agent Nick Castellanos

-

Almost all of the top free agent position players have signed this offseason, but right fielder Nick Castellanos is still looking for a team. The Cubs free agent has been linked to several clubs throughout the offseason and there have been plenty of rumblings that he’d prefer to stay on the North Side of Chicago. However, the Cubs don’t want to spend money this offseason and if a reunion with Castellanos does happen several other moves to unload payroll must occur first.

It’s been reported in more than one occasion that the Cubs want Castellanos back, but again the not wanting to exceed the luxury tax threshold thing is preventing them from re-signing the right-handed hitter. The Cubs are still brought up when reports come out about Castellanos’ market, but in the past week there’s one team that has seemingly emerged as the strongest suitor for him.

On Monday, Jon Heyman and Jon Morosi strongly pointed to the Rangers being the likely destination for Castellanos.

Morosi says, “Castellanos came away from the meeting with a favorable impression of the Rangers.” Heyman went on 670 The Score in the morning and before Morosi’s report said, “Texas is probably the most likely at this point.”

The Rangers have previously been named as the “most prominent” team in on Castellanos in late December.

Meanwhile, the Cubs haven’t done anything so far this offseason to shed payroll, which once again is the only way they’ll be able to “afford” to re-sign Castellanos.
